Trail Riding Information for Illinois
Click below for Illinois Department of Agriculture requirements for equines entering the
state of IL. Basic requirements include a negative EIA within the last year, a certificate of
veterinary inspection (health certificate) within the last 30 days, and an entry permit number
(obtained by the veterinarian).

Generally, IL Department of Natural Resources lands are open April 15 through October
although some are open through November. Check with each area to confirm before
going. For a list of IL DNR lands that allow riding, whether or not they allow horse

See above press release for current restrictions on equestrian use restrictions in the
Eagle Creek, Big Grand Pierre, Upper Bay Creek, and Lusk Creek Watersheds.
Equestrians are restricted to designated trails, interim trails, public roads, parking
areas, equestrian trail heads, and stock confinement areas. In the remainder of the
national forest, equestrian use is permitted everywhere except hiking only trails and
are not allowed off designated trails in natural areas. No equestrian trail-side
camping is allowed in the Lusk Creek, Bay Creek, or Garden of the Gods Wilderness
Areas. In other areas, contact the ranger station in that area for information on the
hunter roadside camps that equestrians may use. Make sure to get up-to-date maps
for the area that you plan to ride, especially if they fall in one of the above areas.
Trail use fees are also being considered and bridle tags are required in some areas.
Trails in the Lusk Creek, Bay Creek, and Garden of the Gods Wilderness areas are
closed Dec 1st – Mar 31. Additionally, during the months of April, May, September,
October, and November, the Lusk Creek Wilderness Area is closed whenever one inch
of rain falls in a 24 hour period. Call the Trail Hotline below to check closure status
before riding in this Wilderness Area.

See above press release for current restrictions on equestrian use restrictions in the
Eagle Creek, Big Grand Pierre, Upper Bay Creek, and Lusk Creek Watersheds.
Equestrians are restricted to designated trails, interim trails, public roads, parking
areas, equestrian trail heads, and stock confinement areas. In the remainder of the
national forest, equestrian use is permitted everywhere except hiking only trails and
are not allowed off designated trails in natural areas. No equestrian trail-side
camping is allowed in the Lusk Creek, Bay Creek, or Garden of the Gods Wilderness
Areas. In other areas, contact the ranger station in that area for information on the
hunter roadside camps that equestrians may use. Make sure to get up-to-date maps
for the area that you plan to ride, especially if they fall in one of the above areas.
Trail use fees are also being considered and bridle tags are required in some areas.
Trails in the Lusk Creek, Bay Creek, and Garden of the Gods Wilderness areas are
closed Dec 1st – Mar 31. Additionally, during the months of April, May, September,
October, and November, the Lusk Creek Wilderness Area is closed whenever one inch
of rain falls in a 24 hour period. Call the Trail Hotline below to check closure status
before riding in this Wilderness Area.
