2007 Trail News
Caanan Conservation Area, Gasconade County -
A lot of people are wondering if this area is still being worked on for an equestrian trail. Yes
it is. Hank and I checked it out, and did some hiking on portions of the trail that they have
been working on. They have done a lot of parking lot work, making enlargements and
improvements. There are several large pull through lanes in one lot. They have been doing
gravel and grading work on the larger hills and at water crossings. The trail is laid out in a
neat way, taking advantage of a lot of small hills. It's like a roller coaster ride with at least
one large long hill that we found. So far it's laid out to be about a 10 mile or so trail. I'm
guessing it'll be open some time next year.
St. Francois State Park, St Francois County -
Park Officials are considering enlarging and paving the equestrian lot as part of a repaving
project this next fiscal year. They anticipate a pull-through design, with separate car
parking. This was stated at a park meeting on Oct. 20th, but is not definite at this time.
Sam A. Baker State Park, Wayne County -
They never did do the prescribed burn that was scheduled the week of October 22 on
Mudlick Mountain.
***Mo State Parks - will be looking for input on a new state park that will be north of
Eminence on the Current River . They are announcing 3 locations where they will have
meetings to get input on what facilities, activities, etc, the public would like to see in the
park. Also, there is a link to an online survey that will run from 10/10/07 thru the end of the
month for those people that can’t make it to one of the meetings. For more information visit:

Babler State Park, St. Louis County –
There is talk of some updates being done to this park. No word on when or how long it'll
take to do them, but some of the updates being considered include moving the equestrian
parking lot and doing something with the Stables in the park, although they do not know
what to do with the stables at this point.
Mark Twain State Park, Monroe County –
Again, there is no word on when or how long it'll take to do this, but Mark Twain State Park
is talking about developing an equestrian trailhead and campground that would give
equestrian riders access to about a total of 75 miles of trail on the Corps of Engineers
property at Mark Twain Lake. A day use area will be developed near the beach along with
picnic areas. A group camp area will be developed. This is a different trail, campground
and lot than what is already there with Lick Creek Trail and Joanna Trail. This is a different
campground and lot than what is already there, but the total trail miles may or may not
include Lick Creek Trail and Joanna Trail . Plans are not clear at this time
Sam A. Baker State Park has moved it's Equestrian Campground.
The campground is now about 2 miles north from the original trailhead. They made a trail
that follows the road leading to the trailhead, but it adds a total of 4 miles of uninteresting
riding before you even get to the normal start of the trail. That could make this trail harder to
ride in one day, due to length and difficulty, for someone who doesn't have fast enough
horses. It could be argued that it would have been worth it if we got better a better
campground, or if the trail mileage added was interesting, but neither case is true. If you
would be interested in contacting the park management to let them know we don't
appreciate a change like this that treats equestrians like second class citizens, click here for a
copy of a letter that you are welcome to use as a reference to write a letter of your own.
Goggins Mountain Trail, Johnson's Shut-ins State Park, in Reynolds County
Is closed for redevelopment until sometime in 2008.
Broemmelsiek Park, in St. Charles County-According to the park's website, the first 4
mile loop of the multi-use trail is now open for use. As soon as I get the information and a
chance to visit this trail, I'll add it to the website also.
Indian Camp Creek, in St. Charles County - they are constructing the Phase II trails.
For a while they were allowing people to use what was complete, but now they are
restricting use to the Phase I portion opened previously.
Mozingo Lake, Nodaway County has an equestrian trail-
There is a 4.5 mile trail at Mozingo Lake. Day use only. As soon as I get the information,
and get a chance to visit this trail, I'll add it to the website too.
Indian Camp Creek Trail is now open-
The trailhead parking lot and part of the trail is now finished and riding is allowed now. I
haven't been to the park yet to check it out and do a write up on it. I hope to do so soon.
Here is a link to their trail map: www.saintcharlescounty.org/Portals/57ad7180-c5e7-49f5-b282-

I'll add a page about it to the St. Louis Area trails as soon as I can get up there to check it
out.
Another New Trail Being Developed-
A new rails to trail is being developed in Joplin. For more information, check out their
website at: www.joplintrailscoalition.org/ruby_jack_trail.htm
Trail Damage-
There has been a lot of downed trees and large limbs on trails due to the last two ice
storms. Many trails are not passable. As I find out information about specific trails, I'll add
them to the Trail Conditions page.
Equestrian Trail Development-
Canaan State Forest, in Gasconade County, is in the early stages of developing a multi-use
trail that will include access for equestrians. The trail has been laid out and volunteers have
been rounded up to start work on it in the spring of 2007. If you would like to help, please
contact Jeff Demand at 573-897-3791 or e-mail him at: Jeff.Demand@mdc.mo.gov
Indian Camp Creek and Broemmelsiek Parks, two new parks not open yet but under
development, in St. Charles County, are also developing Equestrian Trails. Kent James is
the Program Director and is looking for local volunteers for the project. If you would like to
volunteer, please contact Kent James at 636-949-7535 or e-mail him at:

Facility Removal at Trailheads-
Due to federal funding being cut back, many of the Mark Twain National Forest trailheads
and campgrounds are being reduced down to totally primitive sites. If they had any facilities
available, most are now gone, including outhouses and picnic tables. Among the places I
know to have been affected are:
Kaintuck Hollow, Brazil Creek Campground at Berryman Trail, and the Equestrian
Campground at Big Piney Trail in Paddy Creek Wilderness.
I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I know for sure. I'll add the names here of
others as I confirm them.
Big Piney Trial now Safer, Neldon Neal has been captured-
For more information, check out www.houstonherald.com
Big Piney Trail, in Paddy Creek Wilderness,
might be a dangerous place to ride at right now -
Fugitive Neldon Neal, on the run and hiding in the forest, is wanted for allegedly killing his
common law wife on March 13. He is considered armed and dangerous. For more
information, check out www.houstonherald.com
