***Call land manager before traveling to ride.

Sutton Bluff Campground –
Now closed.
Lower Meramec - Closed due to flooding.
Cliff Cave – lower portion of the trail closed due to flooding
North Fork Campground – water is not operational.  Campground open but bring your own water.
Devil’s Backbone Wilderness:  The Raccoon Hollow Trail on the west side of the Wilderness is closed from
Highway CC to the North Fork River .
McAdoo Trail and equestrian campground closed for repairs but should be open sometime this summer.
Attention:  Mark Twain National Forest is announcing a new project proposal for the Kaintuck Hollow Trail Area.  Some
of this will affect us trail riders.  They are asking for comments from the public during a 30 day comment period.  For a
detailed description of their proposals, visit
www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/marktwain/projects  Scroll down to the Kaintuck
West project.  They intend to keep and maintain the trail, which is good, but they also intend to clearcut some portions of
the pine forest (which will personally sadden me).  They will also be adding a new lot for equestrians, taking out Dewitt
Pond, and changing one of the entrances to the current equine parking lot.  Please consider reading through it and comment.

Goggins Mountain:  The trail and new campground, with an area for equestrian camping, is now open.

Atlanta-Long Branch C.A. is one of the areas that used to allow riding with a special use permit, but they have just
decided to close this area to horseback riders totally.  Fellow trail riders, David Hamilton and Lynn Lyda are
planning a trip to Jefferson City on 4/29 to see if they can get this decision reversed with the Right to Ride Bill that
was recently passed.  We support them and wish them luck!

HB 250, Missouri's Right to Ride Bill: Passed and signed law by Governor Nixon on June 26th, 2009.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has recently completed their survey of Missouri trail riders.  You can

Most people don’t think about having to defend themselves while trail riding.  I can honestly say, however, that over the
years I have been in a few situations that had me worried enough to make this an important subject to me.
 I’m not an
expert on this subject, but I’ve bought a video by Scot Hanson called “Self Defense For Trail Riders”, I’ve also talked to
several different policemen I know, and as an avid target shooter I’ve considered whether or not I would be willing to
carry a gun while trail riding.  I will be continuing this article series on several forms and techniques of self defense when
trail riding, including carrying a gun.

Little Indian Creek Trail
This trail is in Franklin County, not too far from St. Clair, MO.
A trail I rode a lot in the "good old days", I hadn't ridden it in quite a few years when Lalita and I got together to
ride it.  The trail had been re-routed, rebuilt, and is maintained by members of the St. Clair Saddle Club and the
Indian Trails Chapter of Show Me Back Country Horsemen.  This trail is a 12 mile double loop.  When it was
reworked, they made it a longer, better marked, and better maintained than it had been in the past.  There is some
downfall and creeks to negotiate, but no other real hazards.  One of the neat things to see along the trail, if you're
into history, cemeteries, or genealogy, is the Baker Cemetery.  If you want to travel here during the wet weather
season, you might want to call ahead before leaving because there is a low water bridge that can become
impassible at times.

Since I was starting a series of articles on this subject, I thought I'd review the video that I bought by Scot Hanson about
Trail Riding Self Defense.  This video will show you how to use your horse to protect yourself if someone would try to
attack you on the trail. Learn what to say, what you and your horse can do, why not to gallop away, how to use the
hindquarters, how to use your horse when dismounted, and much more. Find out how to use your horse's power.

I cannot recommend this video enough.  I will try to cover, in my articles, much of what he has demonstrated in this
video. I may even do various short videos myself to further demonstrate some of his techniques. There is no substitution,
however, to his knowledge, stories, and seeing the whole thing explained by him in detail all in one video.

The only reason we are selling her
is because, now that we have a
horse trailer again, we hope to be
out trail riding & camping a lot.
Our trailer is a 2 horse, which
means one horse will always be
left behind.  All 3 of these horses
go crazy if the other 2 are taken
away.  I don't want to leave one
by itself when we are gone.  We
can't afford to keep 4 horses, so
that means we have to let one go.

She is a great horse, & does just
as great on the trail as she did
here in our obstacle course.  She
seems to enjoy trail riding too,
&  is  actually better in the
woods than on the road.  We
have, however, ridden her into
town, so traffic is no problem.

She can gait fast & throw her
head if you're too hard on her
mouth, be antsy & dance around
if she's in the mood, so she can
be intimidating to a new rider.

We really want her to go to a good
home, so her price is negotiable
to the right person.
